On March 7, 2025, the Courtyard Lawn at The Forum in Bryanston, Johannesburg, transformed into a vibrant tapestry of African fashion, commemorating International Women’s Day. Hosted by Africa Fashion International (AFI), the event showcased the continent’s rich cultural heritage and the pivotal role of women in the fashion industry.
The AFI Fashion Experience commenced with captivating collections from four emerging designers:
- K. Moraba Collective: Presented contemporary designs blending traditional African aesthetics with modern silhouettes.
- Jeyna Mandaa: Showcased intricate patterns and bold colors reflecting African artistry.
- Sucra: Introduced innovative designs highlighting sustainable fashion practices.
- Bar_Sa Clothing: Displayed urban styles infused with African cultural elements.
These designers set the tone for an event that celebrated creativity and cultural pride.
The highlight of the evening was the debut collection by Loice Dube, the AFI Fastrack Prize 2023/2024 winner. Her collection, “Abundant Grace,” drew inspiration from the intersection of African and Western spiritual traditions, transforming the courtyard into a 1950s-style jazz lounge reminiscent of Sophiatown-era South Africa. This fusion paid homage to a time when fashion was a form of resistance and expression.
Dube’s collaboration with AFI Privé’s designers and tailors resulted in a collection that seamlessly blended historical influences with contemporary fashion, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning career.
The event was graced by prominent figures, including Miss South Africa, Mia Leroux, and South African football legend Teko Modise, who added star power to the celebration. Musical enchantment was provided by Xaviera Wealth, whose angelic voice captivated the audience, further elevating the evening’s ambiance.
