AFRICAN ART SPACES: A Multisensory Explosion Reimagines the Art Experience in Johannesburg and Durban (#AfricanArtSpaces)
Johannesburg, South Africa (July 29, 2024): Get ready for a revolutionary art experience! SPACES AFRICA, in collaboration with SA Creatives, has launched AFRICAN ART SPACES, an unconventional, multisensory exhibition that breaks the mold and empowers artists.
This exciting new initiative follows the footsteps of SPACES AFRICA’s successful AFRICAN FASHION SPACES and AFRICAN MUSIC SPACES. It embodies the organization’s mission to transform creative spaces into dynamic platforms for collaboration, innovation, and artistic expression.
AFRICAN ART SPACES isn’t confined to a single artistic discipline. It brings together Southern Africa’s most captivating multidisciplinary talents in contemporary street art, design, and installation art. This creates a truly immersive experience for visitors.
This past week, Braamfontein’s Playground, Johannesburg – a vast parking space – was transformed into a vibrant artistic escape. The event showcased exclusive and purchasable collections from ten trailblazing exhibitors, including Cee The Creator, Kim Van Vuuren, and Naledi Modupi.
The experience kicked off with a launch event on July 24th, followed by a public opening on July 25th. But the surprises didn’t stop there! A surprise exhibition popped up in Durban on July 27th, revealing a captivating collaboration between Robertsons Spice, African Art Spaces, and six of the exhibiting artists.
This unique collaboration saw a collection of self-expressive artworks celebrating Robertsons’ 100-year campaign. Titled “THE ART OF FLAVOUR,” these pieces by Naledi Modupi, Zinhle Sithebe, Njabulo Hlophe, and others captured the essence of Robertsons’ creativity and food. This partnership is particularly significant as SPACES AFRICA prioritizes authentic cultural representation in its collaborations.
The Durban surprise exhibition was held at The Pencil, a renowned establishment frequented by business leaders, creatives, and philanthropists. The Pencil boasts one of the country’s most valuable art collections, and all the AFRICAN ART SPACES artworks will be displayed there for the next month.
The three-day event was a sensory overload in the best way possible. Opening night featured media personalities Leddi G and Siya Ngwekazi as hosts, with Kabelo Moremi taking the reins on Thursday. Luthando Shosha hosted the Durban leg of the event. The evenings were filled with eclectic sounds by artists like Maglera Doe Boy and Wendy Ntinezo, captivating performances by Shekhina and Khuli Chana, and much more.
“At SPACES AFRICA, we are dedicated to elevating creative ambition through authentic and unique collaboration,” stated Fresh AF & SPACES AFRICA CCO, Jay Kayembe. “AFRICAN ART SPACES is a platform built for the unconventional, empowering multidisciplinary creatives and fostering credible representation.”
Fresh AF Managing Director Ally Fathana echoed this sentiment, stating, “AFRICAN ART SPACES marks a new dawn for art exhibitions. Unlike traditional formats, this initiative empowers artists by placing them at the forefront and fostering direct connections with brands. This sets a whole new standard for artistic expression and commercial success.”
The event attracted a diverse crowd, including creatives, art collectors, culture enthusiasts, marketers, curators, and curious explorers from various sectors. This vibrant mix of attendees signifies the beginning of an annual celebration of the region’s rich creative tapestry.
