Mkhwanazi Caught Between Two Probes as Malema Demands Accountability

South Africa is poised for a dramatic showdown: Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi—KwaZulu-Natal’s police chief—finds himself pulled between two powerful investigative bodies. Both Parliament’s ad hoc committee and the Madlanga Commission demand his testimony, but scheduling conflicts threaten to delay both processes.
The Madlanga Commission, established following Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations of police-politician collusion, is set to launch formal hearings on 17 September. Simultaneously, Parliament’s new ad hoc committee, formed to probe the same allegations, also aims to begin its sessions around the same date. Mkhwanazi has informed Parliament that due to his commitments to the commission, he will only be available after 24 September.
EFF leader Julius Malema showed no patience for the scheduling issue during a fiery committee session:
“We’re not going to be told by Mkhwanazi what must happen… If he is not going to make himself available, we’re going to have to summon him. He’s the one who started this mess, and he’s going to have to take responsibility.”
The ad hoc committee chairperson confirmed that invitations were already issued, and Mkhwanazi had signaled availability only after September 24. But Malema insisted on accountability now, calling for an original sworn statement and refusing to accept commission-bound delays.

- Facebook and Instagram Stories saw citizens questioning Mkhwanazi’s priorities, with some accusing him of avoiding the parliamentary process.
