Musa Khawula’s Health Crisis in Sun City Prison
September 8, 2025| Desk: News| Entertainment | South Africa
Johannesburg:Supporters of controversial South African blogger Musa Khawula have raised alarms over his deteriorating health while he remains incarcerated at Sun City Prison. Sources close to the 33-year-old social media personality revealed that he is struggling with poor health and depends heavily on friends for essential supplies such as food, toiletries, and medication.
Khawula, widely known for his provocative online commentary, faces multiple charges including crimen injuria, hate speech, violations of the Cybercrimes Act, and a separate attempted murder case from 2021.
He has remained detained since January 2025, with his bail applications repeatedly denied or postponed, citing ongoing investigations and new evidence.
Reports indicate that Khawula appeared visibly frail during a recent court appearance at Fochville Magistrate’s Court, a stark contrast to his previously energetic and outspoken persona.
“He’s not the same Musa we knew… he’s tired and withdrawn.”
In an effort to aid Khawula, fans initiated a “Free Musa” campaign, selling T-shirts to help cover mounting legal fees. Despite the enthusiasm, the campaign has fallen short of its target, raising less than R2,000 of the intended R50,000.
Friends of the blogger have stepped in to provide food, hygiene products, and medication to support his well-being inside prison.
The “Free Musa” movement has gained traction online, with some praising his unfiltered commentary on celebrity culture, while others, including public figures like Lerato Kganyago and Cassper Nyovest, have criticized his posts for causing reputational harm.
Fans continue to call for better treatment and a fair trial, urging authorities to ensure Khawula’s basic human needs are met while in custody.
The case has reignited debates about prison conditions in South Africa, the rights of incarcerated individuals, and the limits of free speech on social media. Khawula’s situation also highlights the challenges in raising public support and legal funds for controversial figures facing serious criminal charges.
