A heated public exchange between EFF politician Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and controversial religious leader Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has ignited widespread debate across Southern Africa. During a lecture in Malawi, Ndlozi questioned the legitimacy of Bushiri’s wealth, referencing his ongoing legal battles in South Africa, where he is wanted on charges of fraud and money laundering.
In his address, Dr. Ndlozi stated:
“We also have prophets who are very rich. For example, here in Malawi, we have a certain person who is wanted in South Africa. You need to ask that person why he is rich and how he got so much wealth. Please, Hon. Minister, I want to pass by the house of this prophet and tell him there are questions he needs to answer in South Africa.”
The comments were clearly directed at Bushiri, also known as “Major 1,” who later responded with a fiery social media post accusing Ndlozi of xenophobia, political jealousy, and a personal vendetta.
Bushiri, in a now-viral social media post, accused Ndlozi of jealousy and xenophobia, calling the politician’s comments “nonsensical.” The post, widely circulated on Instagram and TikTok, has sparked intense debate around wealth, political ethics, and religious influence in Southern Africa.
In a statement shared on social media, Bushiri expressed surprise at being the subject of discussion during Ndlozi’s lecture. He criticized the Dr Ndlozi for what he perceived as xenophobic tendencies and unwarranted scrutiny.
“I was astonished to hear that Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi attended a public lecture in Malawi and asked, ‘Why am I rich?’. Seriously, why? How did I even come into your public political lecture? Can’t these jealous, poorly rated politicians like him, with xenophobic tendencies, leave me alone at once?”
Bushiri defended his wealth by citing his contributions to Malawi’s economy, including job creation through his farms and the Goshen City project.
“This past year alone, I created over 5,000 jobs at my farms and the Goshen City project. And what about you in South Africa?”
The exchange has sparked diverse reactions on social media platforms:
- TikTok: “Bushiri’s response to Ndlozi’s question about his wealth is a masterclass in defending one’s achievements. #Bushiri #Ndlozi”
- Facebook: “The tension between Bushiri and Ndlozi highlights the complex interplay between religion, politics, and wealth in Southern Africa. #BushiriVsNdlozi”
In March this year, a Malawian court has ruled that Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, can be extradited to South Africa to face multiple criminal charges. The couple, who fled South Africa in 2020 while out on bail, are accused of offenses including rape, fraud, and money laundering. The South African government has welcomed the ruling, viewing it as a testament to judicial independence and international cooperation .
The dialogue between Bushiri and Ndlozi underscores ongoing discussions about wealth, accountability, and the role of religious leaders in economic development. As public figures continue to engage on these topics, the discourse reflects broader societal questions about prosperity and responsibility.
