Remembering Heroes: Tributes to Dutch Anti-Apartheid Activists
In a powerful tribute to the enduring spirit of freedom, South Africa and the Netherlands are working together. They are creating a unique artistic collaboration. The event, titled “Beyond Borders,” commemorates 30 years of South African democracy. It celebrates international solidarity in the fight against apartheid.
Held at the evocative Freedom Park heritage site in Pretoria, “Beyond Borders” promises a captivating program. H.E. Ambassador Bridgette Mabandla is a dedicated anti-apartheid activist. She is also a former South African Minister. She will deliver a keynote address and offer a firsthand perspective on the fight for democracy.
Adding another layer of artistic expression, the event features an original poem by the renowned spoken word duo Yamoria. This commissioned piece explores themes of resilience, justice, and unity, binding the two nations through shared values. The poem will be performed live. It will be presented to guests in a commemorative booklet. This serves as a lasting symbol of their commitment to democracy.
Further enriching the experience, “Beyond Borders” showcases a commissioned illustration by Vi & Zhi Illustration. This visual masterpiece captures the spirit of Yamoria’s poem, translating its emotions and ideals into a powerful image.
The event pays homage to the heroes who played a crucial role in dismantling apartheid. “Beyond Borders” includes moving video tributes to six Dutch anti-apartheid activists, immortalized on Freedom Park’s Wall of Names. These personalized stories offer a glimpse into the lives of extraordinary individuals. They bravely stood alongside South Africa in its fight for freedom.
“Beyond Borders” offers an exciting teaser of a larger exhibition to be launched in 2025 at Freedom Park’s museum space. Totem Media is curating the exhibition. It will draw from the Netherlands Institute of Southern Africa (NiZA) collection. This collection was donated to SAHA by the IISH. This captivating display will feature a diverse collection of artifacts. These include iconic activist T-shirts, vinyl records, and posters. The collection showcases the breadth of international support for the South African liberation movement.
Ambassador Joanne Doornewaard, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to South Africa, expressed her strong support. She praised these creative contributions. “Artists around the world joined forces with activists in the fight against apartheid,” Ambassador Doornewaard stated. “This event allows us to celebrate our shared history through powerful voices and visuals. It transforms our journey into a lasting work of art.”
The stirring program also features performances by the University of Pretoria Youth Choir, adding a melodious dimension to the celebration.
