History Made: Mia Le Roux, Advocate for Inclusion, Wins Miss South Africa 2024
On Saturday night, South Africa witnessed a historic moment as Mia Le Roux, a 28-year-old marketing manager from Cape Town, was crowned Miss South Africa 2024 at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria.
Le Roux’s victory transcends the glamour and prestige of the pageant. She becomes the first differently-abled finalist to win the title, a powerful symbol of inclusivity and the celebration of diverse beauty.
Born deaf, Le Roux received a cochlear implant at the age of two, a life-altering surgery that allowed her to hear and connect with the world through speech. She describes the experience as a journey of determination and resilience, emphasizing the importance of never giving up.
Le Roux’s platform extends far beyond the glitz of pageantry. She aspires to be a voice for those who feel different and excluded, particularly those facing challenges due to hearing impairments.
As Miss South Africa, Le Roux plans to leverage her platform to advocate for change. She aims to work with the government, corporate South Africa, and anyone willing to contribute, to address issues including financial exclusion, lack of resources, and the struggles faced by the differently-abled community.
“As a little girl, I never would have thought that someone like me could become Miss South Africa,” Le Roux shared in her emotional acceptance speech. “It is extremely powerful what this could mean to other little girls – that even if you have something that makes you different, you still can achieve your dreams with determination and hard work.”
Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss South Africa Organisation, expressed her pride in Le Roux, acknowledging her embodiment of the organization’s ethos – “if you can dream it, you can achieve it.”
The Miss South Africa 2024 pageant finale was a testament to female empowerment. An all-female judging panel, a female producer, and a female director were just a few of the highlights showcasing the strength and talent of South African women.
